China Mobile (NYSE: CHL, HKG: 0941), the world's biggest wireless phone carrier, on Monday launched its self-developed operating system for the OPhone to pit itself against China Unicom (NYSE: CHU, SHA: 600050, HKG: 0762) that sealed a multiyear iPhone deal with Apple over the weekend. The system is based on Linux and compatible with Google's Android. It is reported that more than 20 phone makers, such as Lenovo, Dell, LG, Dopod, Philips, and Hisense, are developing the handset for the OPhone. China's mobile services earnings rose 11% year-on-year to ¥283.4 billion, or 59.3% of the total telecommunications sector, in the first 7 months of the year, and the number of the services users has breached the 700 million threshold, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
