China is going to announce later this month incentives for buying vehicles powered by new energy, said Miao Yu, vice minister for industry and information technology. The nation's car production and sales both cracked the 13 million mark in 2009 overtaking the United States as the world's biggest auto market as well as raising concerns over air pollution, carbon emissions, road safety and traffic congestion. "I'd like to reckon 10%-15% of our vehicles will be powered by new energy by 2020," said Miao, implying the number is just a fraction. Separately, a survey by McKinsey has revealed that only 3.8% of respondents were willing to buy electric cars and the percentage rose to 6.4% if they were granted a $7,400 subsidy. Of the 1,200 existing and prospective private car owners canvassed in Shanghai, 85% drove or would drive less than 100km a day.
