Production of GM's Spark will not be
transferred to the Wuling plant in Qingdao,
China Business News reports. Spark is facing
a supply shortage in China,
with dealers limited to shipments of 40 cars per month from the factory, due to
production lines that are in need of upgrades. Rumors have been circulating
that GM would move production to solve this problem, since Wuling's plants are
better suited to sub-compact cars. Shanghai GM Wuling vice president Guo Lumin
said that the company has no plans at present to move production on the Spark;
the Qingdao
plant, which went into operation in June, will continue to manufacture
Wuling-labeled vehicles. It is expected to produce 20,000 cars this year, with
numbers between 60,000 and 70,000 for next year. Spark's sales through October
reached 21,000 vehicles, far short of the 100,000 sold by competitor QQ,
primarily because of import restrictions on engines.
