The top 10 Chinese mergers and acquisitions of non mainland-based companies in 2011 involved a combined $27.74 billion, and eight of the transactions involved companies in the energy sector, Dealogic data reveal.

Top 10 Chinese M&A of foreign companies in 2011 by value:

1. Sinopec (NYSE: SNP, SHA: 600028, HKG: 0386) purchases 30% of Galp, a Portuguese oil company, for $4.8 billion. Deal announced in November, status: uncompleted.

2. China Three Gorges Corp purchases 21.35% of EDP-Energias, a Portuguese electricity producer, for $3.53 billion. Deal announced in December, status: uncompleted.

3. ENN Energy (HKG: 2688) purchases 52.68% of Hong Kong-based China Gas Holdings (HKG: 0384) and Sinopec (NYSE: SNP, SHA: 600028, HKG: 0386) purchases of 43.1% of China Gas Holdings for a total of $3.43 billion. Deal announced in December, status: uncompleted.

4. China Investment Corp purchases 30% of the oil exploration and production unit of GDF Suez, a French energy company, for $3.27 billion. Deal announced in August, status: completed.

5. Sinopec (NYSE: SNP, SHA: 600028, HKG: 0386) purchases Canada-based Daylight Energy for $2.9 billion. Deal announced in October, status: completed.

6. ChemChina purchases Elkem AS, a Norwegian silicon maker, for $2.17 billion. Deal announced in January, status: completed.

7. Yancoal (NYSE: YZC, SHA: 600188, HKG: 1171) purchases Cloucester, an Australian coal miner, for $2.09 billion. Deal announced in December, status: uncompleted.

8. A consortium headed by Citic Group purchases 15% of CBMM, a Brazilian miner and smelter, for $1.95 billion. Deal announced in September, status: completed.

9. CNOOC (NYSE: CEO, HKG: 0883) purchases Opti, a Canadian oil-sands producer, for $1.84 billion. Deal announced in July, status: completed.

10. Sinopec (NYSE: SNP, SHA: 600028, HKG: 0386) purchases Australia-based Pacific LNG for $1.77 billion. Deal announced in February, status: completed.
