Capital of Liaoning Province, Shenyang was established as a major heavy industrial base following 1949, and despite having undergone a “rust-belt” city period during the 1980s, the city has been revitalized through a “Revitalize Northeast China” program and the introduction of software, electronics, auto manufacturing, and electronic industries. Large industries companies such as Brilliance China Auto, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, and Neusoft Group (the biggest software company in China) have established themselves in the city.
The city is also seeing a rapidly growing tourism industry and signs of future growth, including a large entertainment park and a BMW and Brilliance China Auto joint venture automotive plant. In April 2010, the central government initiated a “Shenyang Economic Zone” which is expected to draw in major investment and infrastructure construction.
