Urumqi, known as Wulumuqi in Chinese, is the capital and largest city in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in far northwestern China. With a population of 3.1 million, the city's GDP grew 12.2% to ¥131 billion ($20.8 billion) in 2010. Urumqi is a regional hub for industrial production, responsible for nearly two-thirds of Xinjiang's total along with its second and third largest cities. It is also China's gateway to Central Asia through the Urumqi Foreign Economic Relations and Trade Fair, which was renamed the China-Eurasia Expo in 2011.
