Located in China’s wealthiest region, Wuxi is a main light industry centre, leading the nation in textiles, apparel, electronics and other consumer products. With a substantial heavy industry sector, Wuxi is also home to iron, steel, IT, high tech, and recently, solar energy equipment industries. The city sees comparatively stronger investment growth that in most coastal cities, and in 2010 its service sector outperformed its manufacturing sector in investment and rate of increase.
Based on its strength in microelectronics and semiconductors, Wuxi wants to establish the first “sensor city” in China and has plans to launch demonstrative projects for sensor networks monitoring environmental conditions, transportation and public safety. Notably, the city is home to a community of flourishing private enterprises: 12 of the 16 companies with revenue over 10 billion RMB in Wuxi are owned by entrepreneurs.
