China Employment Industry

Approximately 36% of China's labor force was employed in agriculture, 29% in industry and 35% in service. Urban registered unemployment rate stood at 4.1% as of the end of 2012.

China's official salaries are reported only for urban workers on a yearly basis by the National Bureau of Statistics. Salaries fall into private sector salaries and non-private sector salaries with industry breakdowns. On average non-private sector companies, including state-owned and foreign-funded companies, pay much higher salaries than those in the private sector.

Urban annual salaries at non-private firms in China averaged RMB46,769 in 2012, up 11.9% nominally from the year before and up 9% if inflation is accounted for. The financial industry continued to top all industries with an average salary of RMB89,743 in 2012, followed by RMB80,510 for the software and information technology industry and RMB69,254 for the scientific research and technical support industry. The agriculture, hospitality and environmental protection industries ranked at the bottom of the list, with salaries of RMB22,687, RMB31,267 and RMB32,343 respectively in 2012.

Urban salaries at privately-owned firms averaged RMB28,752 in 2012, up 17.1% nominally from the year before and up 14% if inflation is accounted for, the National Bureau of Statistics added. The best paid private-sector industry was the software and information technology industry, where workers earned an average salary of RMB39,518 in 2012, followed by RMB36,598 for the scientific research and technical support industry and RMB32,696 for the financial industry. The worst paid private-sector industry was the agriculture industry, with an average salary of RMB21,973 in 2012.
